After your website is registered, it needs to be submitted for ownership verification. You will receive an email explaining two methods for ownership verification, and the same will be available on the "site management" tab of your profile page.

To start the verification process, click on "Verify your site".

Verify your site

You can check the website name you entered is correct by clicking on the website name link next to "Verifying site". If you're unable to access your site through this link, double-check the spelling or the protocol entered and make corrections as needed.

Then select one of the two site verification methods: meta tag or upload an HTML file.

  1. When using the first method to add a meta tag into your website's home page, please be aware of the following placement and content issues.

    Meta Tag Placement

    The <meta> tag must be placed in the <head> section, before the first <body> section.

    For example:

    <head>
    <title>Title text</title>
    <meta name="norton-safeweb-site-verification" > </head>
    <body>
    . . .
    </body>

    Meta Tag Content

    The authentication code string must exactly match the generated string. Be careful when copying or inserting the string so that no extra characters are inserted, including spaces or formatting characters. Depending on your editing tool, it may add some formatting information, so be sure to compare the copied data with your source to make sure that it exactly matches with the original string. Also, be sure that no spaces are entered before, after, or in-between the beginning and ending quotes for the content information.

    For example:

    <meta name="norton-safeweb-site-verification" content="actual_string_content_with_no_spaces_or_line_feed_or_formatting_characters"/>

    Note that some template-based / quick design site-building programs may allow the creation of custom meta tags through a user interface or "wizard" tool. When using your meta tag wizard, do not use the HTML code characters such as </>/". These will be inserted automatically by your program.

    To create a custom meta tag:

    1. Open your meta tag creator tool.
    2. For the meta tag name, enter exactly: norton-safeweb-site-verification
    3. For content, copy and paste only your 128-character authentication code. (Be sure there are no line breaks or spaces in the code.)
    4. Save the new meta tag to your home page and then upload or publish the page.

    If you are unable to place a new meta tag on your website home page, add the authentication code string to your list of keywords. For example:

    <meta name="keywords" content="keyword1, keyword2, nsw-actual_string_content_with_no_spaces_or_line_feed_or_formatting_characters"/>

    Once you have added the meta tag to your homepage, click on the orange "Verify Now" button.

    Verify Button

  2. The second verification method requires that you add an HTML authentication file at the root folder of your website. If you select the verification method as "Upload an HTML file", click the provided link to download the authentication file.

    Auth file download link

    Once you click on the link, a popup window will be displayed indicating a file download (note, this window may look different depending on what browser you're using). "Save" the file to a convenient location on your computer.

    Auth file save dialog

    Using your site building program, upload / copy the saved HTML file to the Root Directory of your website.

    (Please note the nortonsw file is not within a sub-folder)

    Once you confirm the upload is successful, click on the orange "Verify Now" button.

    Verify Button

If you have correctly completed the site verification process, you should see "ownership verified" in the status column next to your site name on the site management page.

Once your website ownership verification is complete, you may remove the HTML file from the root folder or remove the authentication code you entered in the meta tags. Before removal, please make sure that you see the ownership verified status under the "site management" tab in your Norton Safe Web account.

If you host your website on Google sites, follow these steps to complete the site verification:

  1. Go to your Google sites homepage.
  2. Click on the "More actions" button on the top right.
  3. Click "Manage site" in the drop-down menu.
  4. Click "General" under "Site settings" on the left side pane.
  5. Add the 128-character authentication code (contents of the norton-safeweb-site-verification meta-tag) into the "Site Description" box as shown below. (Be sure there are no line breaks or spaces in the code.) The authentication code can be added either before or after the site description text.
  6. google_sites_settings

  7. Click the "Save changes" button.
  8. Now go back to the "site management" tab of your Norton Safe Web profile page. Click on the "Verify your site" link against the Google site you want to verify. Click on the "meta tag" link and click the orange "Verify now" button at the bottom.
